Los premios que entregan las asociaciones de críticos del cine y la televisión, delimita los géneros como ciencia ficción, acción y comedia, además de la categoría absoluta de Mejor película.
El mito de que los críticos se decantan por las películas aburridas y los dramas profundos podría haber pasado a la historia, al menos en Estados Unidos. La 21 edición de los premios Critics’ Choice ha reforzado el camino hacia el Oscar de un film de acción y ciencia ficción, un muy comercial derroche de adrelanina titulado Mad Max: Furia en el camino / Mad Max: Fury Road, que ha recibido 13 nominaciones en las 28 categorías cinematográficas de estos galardones que concede las asociaciones de críticos Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) y Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA). Entre ellos destacan las de mejor película, film de acción y film de ciencia ficción, además de dos para Charlize Theron como mejor actriz e intérprete de acción.
Uno de los sellos de identidad de los Critic's Choice es precisamente que delimita los géneros, además de ofrecer la categoría absoluta de mejor película, en la que el film de George Miller compite con otros nueve: "Sicario", "Carol", "El renacido / The Revenant", "Room", "Spotlight", "Puente de espías / Bridge of Spies", "La gran apuesta / The Big Short", "Misión Rescate / The Martian" y "Brooklyn".
Como mejores directores, tienen opción Miller, Todd Haynes ("Carol"), el mexicano Alejandro González Iñárritu ("El renacido / The Revenant"), Steven Spielberg ("Puente de espías / Bridge of Spies"), Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), y Ridley Scott ("Misión Rescate / The Martian").
Para los premios de interpretación masculina los críticos han destacado a Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"), Matt Damon ("Misión Rescate / The Martian"), Johnny Depp ("Black Mass"), Leonardo DiCaprio ("El renacido / The Revenant"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") y Eddie Redmayne ("La chica danesa / The Danish Girl"), y para los femeninos a Cate Blanchett ("Carol"), Brie Larson ("Room"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Joy"), Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years"), Charlize Theron ("Mad Max: Furia en el camino / Mad Max: Fury Road") y Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn")
Al igual que ocurre en los premios anuales del sindicato de actores, también los críticos incluyen una categoría de mejor elenco en su conjunto, y las candidatas son "La gran apuesta / The Big Short", "Los odiosos ocho / The Hateful Eight", "Spotlight", "Straight Outta Compton" y "Trumbo".
No hubo este año representación iberoamericana en el rubro de mejor película extranjera.
