Un año más, los Independent Spirit Awards celebran el cine de producción independiente en Estados Unidos a través de unos galardones que, esta vez, no se entregarán la noche antes de los Oscars de Hollywood, como es habitual. La gala se celebrará el día 22 de abril y entre los nominados aparecen algunas de las películas más aclamadas de la temporada, especialmente Nomadland de Chloe Zao, que se llevó el León de Oro en la pasada edición del Festival de Venecia y es una de las grandes favoritas para los Oscars.

Contra ella competirán títulos como Nunca, casi nunca, a veces, siempre / Never Rarely Sometimes Always de Eliza Hittman, Minari de Lee Isaac Chung, First Cow de Kelly Reichardt y Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom de George C. Wolfe, por la que Chadwick Boseman ha sido nominado de forma póstuma. Además, en las categorías televisivas, destaca la presencia de "Small Axe" de Steve McQueen y "I May Destroy You" de Michaela Coel, además de la representación de Netflix a través de uno de sus fenómenos de 2020, "Unorthodox".
